Am I missing out on a fundamental strategy or is this a niche tactic or completely useless? Resources seem to be much better spent on things that can generate income immediately rather than in the future. Regarding speculating/buying resources, I never do this because it never seems to pay off. I have only tried other ones a couple times. I play either Expansive or Scientific HQs. Do players tend to remap a lot of the default hotkeys for faster movement? I know there is a setting in Gameplay to always have it on for production tab, but for the actual map, I still have to press x all the the time. (Side note, why doesn't the game just have 'x' always on so you don't constantly have to press it to see the profitability of your buildings?). I'm not very good at anticipating what will be profitable in the future, but just building what yields instant profit has allowed me to beat Employee pretty easily, but Manager seems like several levels more difficult and I'm wondering if its because of my poor forecasting ability. I understand that it refers to what would be immediately profitable, not necessarily what will be profitable in the future. I use the 'x' toggle to try to determine what is the most profitable structure to buy. I probably need to spend more time monitoring the AIs to see if they are investing in the same resources as I am. This works okay, but I find it easy to end up over-investing in a certain resource. I look at the colony at the start and infrequently throughout the game to get an idea what resource might be the most in demand now or in the future. I try to take this into account when placing my HQ. It seems like having a large travel distance can be pretty harmful in the early game because of fuel cost eating into profits. If I don't do this, then my debt accrues faster than I can micro-manage my inventory.Īs a general rule, it seems like building one or two power structures at the start is a good idea since they almost always start out more profitable than any other base resource. I always set all my resources to auto-sell (except in rare cases where I know I will need the resources myself, like for an HQ upgrade). In either case, I often have to restart a skirmish/campaign at the very beginning because an AI claims the locations I want. The devs should just get rid of the scan-based start.

I prefer playing with full map revealed because scanning the world is extremely annoying because the AIs always get a head start.
Let me know if any of these are incorrect: I am looking for some specific tips in the early game to not get behind from the start. I've read a couple guides but that has only gotten me to the point I'm at now.
I'm wondering if there is something fundamental that I am missing. The AIs get their HQ upgrades WAY faster and snowball me.
I just bought the game and I've played ~30 hrs so far and I can beat Employee difficulty pretty handily now, but in Manager difficulty I get wrecked from the get go.
